Back To The Future: The Story of Berghaus Rucksacks
Backpacks. Rucksacks. Rucsacs. Whatever you call them, they’re a vital part of your outdoor kit. And a vital part of the Berghaus story.
It all began in 1970 with the introduction of the Berg 172 and Berg 272 rucksacks. These were followed two years later in 1973/74 with the rucksack that would change the outdoor world – the Cyclops . With its internal frame – arguably the first rucksack to have one – plus extra padding, the Cyclops was a hugely popular rucksack.
A New Decade Of Innovation
The 1980's saw two new innovations from Berghaus – the A .B. (Adjustable Back) Carrying System and Occipital Cavity technology.
Both technologies are still widely used today and helped cement Berghaus’ reputation as a leader not just in rucksacks, but in outdoor performance products as a whole.
The Award Winning 1990s
In 1993, the FGA Adjustable Rucksack System was introduced – another classic innovation from Berghaus.
But it was the Nitro rucksack , with its ultra-modern styling and unique Limpet carrying and compression system that really transformed the world of rucksacks in 1998. In fact, The Design Council of Great Britain was so impressed with the Nitro’s groundbreaking design that it awarded it the Millennium Product Award .
The 90’s also saw the introduction of a revolutionary rucksack design – the Freeflow . The Freeflow meant walking in heat or when working hard became a far more comfortable experience by introducing an airflow space between the rucksack and the wearer’s back. The Freeflow is still a favourite today – find out more about how it works.
In 2010 the Freeflow Pro was launched featuring a revised design and lighter frame.
A New Century Of Rucksacks
Almost 40 years on from their very first rucksacks and Berghaus continue to innovate. 2005 saw the launch of the world's most innovative back system to date –
The system, which was designed to work with the body’s natural movements , not only stole the show at all major UK and international shows that year but also received the ISPO award for innovation .
